Common Questions about Classes and Pilates
How do I get the most out of Pilates?
Like any exercise program, being consistent is probably the most important thing. It is also important to be patient and give it a little time. Don’t just try it once. I offer a one time introductory special package of 5 sessions for the price of 4 because I believe it takes at least 5 sessions to really grasp what Pilates is about and if it works for you.
If I have an injury should I do Pilates?
Following an injury always consult your physician first before starting any exercise program. Working with a qualified instructor, such as myself, would be important so that the proper exercises can be selected and modified for your specific condition and to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly. My background and experience as an Occupational Therapist as well as Certified Pilates Instructor makes me particularly well qualified to work with people post-injury. My experience is extensive with all different groups of people having various musculoskeletal or neurological conditions. One of the beauties of Pilates is that it can be modified for any skill level, especially because the spring loaded Pilates equipment can either assist with a movement or add additional resistance.
What is the difference between doing exercises on the mat or the equipment?
Mat work is one part of the Pilates Method. The exercises on the mat involve supporting your own body weight with the movements. Mat work really helps you to understand your body and the exercises, once learned, can be done on your own.
When you do the exercises on the spring loaded equipment (which include the Reformer, the Cadillac and the Stability Chair) your body is more supported. Since the equipment is spring loaded it can either aide you with the movement or provide additional resistance to make it more challenging.
What if I am overweight or unconditioned?
Pilates is for EVERYONE! You will learn how to engage your muscles correctly, improve your posture and use proper bio-mechanics, enabling you to move more safely and be more successful in other types of physical activities. Bodies By Pilates is very personal and private as well as much less intimidating than some gyms.
How often should I take Pilates classes?
As with any exercise routine, the more frequently you do it and the more consistent you are the quicker and better your results. Engaging in Pilates 1 to 3 times per week is ideal. If you are only taking class once or twice a week it would benefit you to also do some Pilates mat home exercises (but you also certainly get some benefit out of even once a week). In addition it is also recommended that you engage in some form of aerobic exercise for a well rounded routine.
Why should I take private sessions?
In Pilates there is a big emphasis on technique. Results depend on the individual’s ability to recruit muscles efficiently and with the correct alignment. In a private or semi – private session your time will be spent on exercises specifically tailored for your needs to maximize your results. In a group setting you will still get a great workout but the instructor’s attention will necessarily be divided.
What should I wear to my Pilates session?
Wear clothing that is comfortable and you can move in easily. Leggings, leotards, sweatpants, shorts, sport tops or any other clothing that stretches will work. Tighter fitting clothing is better than very loose so that your instructor is better able to see your alignment. Pants with pockets and/or zippers, long necklaces or large bracelets are not recommended because they could be uncomfortable and/or interfere with your workout.
Is there a place to change at your studio?
Yes. There is a private dressing area.
